Overview

The House Supervisor demonstrates JFK values, leadership and interpersonal skills to oversee the clinical and leadership functions of the Medical Center in the absence of unit managers and senior leadership. The House Supervisor assures the provision of safe and effective patient care after hours, on weekends and on holidays. Responsibilities include assessment of all departments to maintain patient flow and assure continuity of care. Report pertinent information to management and administration. He/she provides supervision of staff in the delivery of care for patient and serves as a clinical resource. He/she assumes the leadership position for Incident Command until other qualified personnel arrive on-site. The House Supervisor responds to codes and rapid responses, deploys staff, supplies and/or equipment as needed. The House Supervisor is responsible for effectively communicating unusual occurrences or complaints for follow -up and intervenes immediately as needed. He / She ensures appropriate use of hospital resources by reviewing all patients admitted to the hospital and evaluating appropriateness of admission using approved criteria. Ensures appropriate patient status (inpatient, observation, ambulatory) to assure appropriate placement and bed usage to maximize patient flow.

Responsibilities

1. Provides continuity in supervision of hospital personnel and provides guidance and direction to maintain quality clinical care along with prudent fiscal management of supplies and staff. Deploys staff, supplies, and/or equipment as needed. Creates and maintains an environment, which promotes mutual trust, acceptance, recognition and respect. Rounds on all units and departments and supervises patient care. Coordinates with department heads to identify patient problems and assists in formatting effective resolution. Responds to all Codes and Rapid Responses. Performs clinical support (i.e. obtains medical records) Keeps self and staff informed of medical/legal aspects of nursing care given in assigned areas. Initiates and manages Incident Command Center until Emergency Management staff arrive.

2. Collaboratively leads Nursing and Hospital departments, while providing mentorship, education, and training as directed. Interprets hospital policies and regulations for staff members, physicians, patients and visitors. Facilitates critical thinking and problem solving skills at the unit and department level. Develops and maintains a coordinated team approach with physicians, nurses and allied health personnel. Participates in the orientation of new staff. Facilitates and monitors timely discharges and transfers between units and other facilities Assists in prioritizing assigning patient's beds and patient flow in absence of a Capacity Manager Additional duties as assigned. Collaborates with nurse managers, case managers, physicians, charge nurses, ED managers, infection control and ancillary department managers to ensure appropriate patient placement decisions and to ensure patient safety. Maintains ongoing communication throughout the day with all essential personnel to maintain daily operations.

3. Assumes leadership of care in the absence of the administrator. Promotes patient satisfaction by demonstrating extraordinary service. Provides direction, problem solves and makes decisions with operational issues for hospital departments Provides input into performance evaluations and competency assessment. Communicates concerns and issues as necessary in a timely fashion. Initiates disciplinary actions as appropriate in conjunction with managers Participates in performance improvement projects focused on organizational and department goals. Ensures compliance with state, federal and regulatory agency requirements for facilities, care and staff (i.e. EMTALA, JC & State Department of Health).

4. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

5. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Graduate of an approved School of Nursing. BSN or currently enrolled in a Baccalaureate Program

2. At least 5 years recent clinical experience. Demonstrates clinical knowledge and skills. Demonstrates leadership competencies. Demonstrated ability to work independently.

3. Good basic knowledge of the nursing process, standards of care, regulatory requirements and best practices. Maintains computer skills.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Knowledge of milliman and/or interqual criteria, utilization review, discharge planning and case management.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
